Objective
To depict various temporal bone abnormalities on high-resolution computed tomography in congenital aural atresia patients, and correlate these findings with auditory function test results and microtia subgroup.
MethodsForty patients (56 ears) with congenital malformation of the auricle and/or external auditory canal were evaluated. Auricles were graded according to Marx's classification, divided into subgroups of minor (grades I and II) and major (III and IV) microtia. Other associated anomalies of the external auditory canal, tympanic cavity, ossicular status, oval and round windows, facial nerve, and inner ear were evaluated.
ResultsMinor and major microtia were observed in 53.6 and 46.4 per cent of ears respectively. Mean hearing levels were 62.47 and 62.37 dB respectively (p =
0 .98). The malleus was the most commonly dysplastic ossicle (73.3 vs 80.8 per cent of ears respectively, p =0 .53). Facial nerve (mastoid segment) abnormalities were associated (p =0 .04) with microtia subgroup (80 vs 100 per cent in minor vs major subgroups).ConclusionMicrotia grade was not significantly associated with mean hearing levels or other ear malformations, except for external auditory canal and facial nerve (mastoid segment) anomalies. High-resolution computed tomography is essential in congenital aural atresia, before management strategy is decided.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) is a debilitating psychiatric disorder characterized by feelings of low self-worth and high self-criticism. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive intervention that modulates cortical excitability by administering pulsating magnetic fields to the scalp. Studies have shown the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) glutamate to be decreased in MDD patients. In adults, rTMS has been shown to improve mood, decrease Hamilton Depression Rating Scale scores and increase glutamate in the DLPFC.
The aim of this investigation is to determine whether this effect could be seen in adolescents. We hypothesize an increase in DLPFC glutamate levels following treatment.
Eleven treatment-resistant MDD patients (4 females and 7 males, ages 15–21) were clinically assessed and underwent baseline and posttreatment MRI scans. Treatments were performed every weekday for three weeks. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy was used to measure glutamate levels and was analysed using the LC Model method.
Seven patients were treatment responders who had a 62% decrease in Ham-D scores from 25.43 (±7.85) to 9.57 (±1.51) and a 30% decrease in Children's Depression Rating Scale scores from 74.43 (±11.04) to 52.14 (±8.99). Responders showed lower baseline glutamate levels at 8.73 (±1.21) mmol/kg-wet-weight, which increased by 12% to 9.77 (±1.18). Non-responders had higher baseline glutamate levels at 11.87 (±0.47) and levels decreased by 9% to 10.75 (±0.13).
Evidence of increases in excitatory neurotransmitter levels in the DLPFC and alleviation of symptoms indicate that rTMS exerts anti-depressant effects and can be pursued as a safe and effective therapy for adolescent MDD.

The half-carcasses from twelve Dorset Horn x Border Leicester-Merino lambs (3-5 months old) were used to investigate the relationships between the weight of the carcass and its cuts and their chemical composition. The specific gravity of the whole carcass and of the cuts was also measured.
Half-carcass weight and chemical composition were highly correlated. Weight could be used to predict the chemical composition with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The loin, the leg, the leg plus loin and the residual were shown to be highly correlated with the chemical composition of the halfcarcass. The loin and leg plus loin are the most convenient to use.

We present revised estimates of the equilibrium abundances of heavy elements supported by radiative levitation in the atmospheres of hot DA white dwarfs. We emphasize, in particular, the role of trace pollutants that may be present in the background plasma, an effect which has been heretofore neglected. We take advantage of the availability of a table of detailed monochromatic opacities calculated for a plasma made of H containing small amounts of C, N, O, and Fe to illustrate how the equilibrium abundances of levitating elements react to the flux redistribution caused by the addition of these small traces of opaque material. We also consider two other improvements: a more sophisticated treatment of the momentum redistribution process and ion experiences following a photoexcitation, and use of an upgraded value for the line profile width associated with pressure broadening.
